Moral Demands and Permissions/Prerogatives
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2024-6-28 13:49)
|
[New Entry by Thomas Hurka on June 27, 2024.]
If morality and self-interest don't always coincide - if sometimes doing what's right isn't also best for you - morality can sometimes require you to do what will be worse for you or to forgo an act that would benefit you. But some philosophers think a reasonable morality can't be too demanding in this sense and have proposed moral views that are less so....

Form vs. Matter
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2024-6-28 8:54)
|
[Revised entry by Thomas Ainsworth on June 27, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Aristotle famously contends that every physical object is a compound of matter and form. This doctrine has been dubbed "hylomorphism", a portmanteau of the Greek words for matter (hule) and form (eidos or morphe). Highly influential in the development of Medieval philosophy, Aristotle's hylomorphism has also enjoyed something of a renaissance in contemporary metaphysics....

Divine Revelation
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2024-6-27 13:24)
|
[Revised entry by Mats Wahlberg on June 26, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography, notes.html]
"Revelation" (lat. revelatio) is a translation of the Greek word apokalypsis, which means the removal of a veil so that something can be seen. Many religions appeal to purported divine revelations in order to explain and justify their characteristic beliefs about God, and revelation has usually been understood as an epistemic notion.[1] Paradigmatically, it refers to alleged instances of divine speaking or special divine acts in history, although in a more general sense "revelation" can denote any means of divine self-disclosure, for example through nature. The topic of divine revelation has been a long-standing and central focus in theology, and philosophical discussions have often taken their cues from Christian theological debates.[2] This entry will treat theological perspectives only in so far as they are relevant for philosophical questions about the purported nature and means ...

[Revised entry by Kimberley Brownlee and David Jenkins on June 26, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
In almost all our activities, we engage with other people, usually in persistent connections or associations that vary according to our purposes. We have foundational associative experiences within our families; formative years of schooling with peers and teachers; workplace links with bosses, employees, and colleagues with whom we share at least corridors, carpet, and resources; and connections with like-minded companions, such as fellow hobbyists, devotees, friends, or union members....

Sentence Connectives in Formal Logic
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2024-6-26 11:43)
|
[Revised entry by Lloyd Humberstone on June 25, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography, notes.html]
Natural language sentence-linking words (like "and", "or") have traditionally had aspects of their use simulated by corresponding connectives in various systems of formal logic. (In fact we use the word "connective" more generously, so that there don't have to be two or more sentences linked, allowing us to consider the analogues of words like "not" and "necessarily" as connectives too.) Among the questions this enterprise has raised are the following. (1)...
