Bohmian Mechanics
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2025-9-20 17:48)
|
[Revised entry by Sheldon Goldstein on September 20, 2025.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Bohmian mechanics, which is also called the de Broglie-Bohm theory, the pilot-wave model, and the causal interpretation of quantum mechanics, is a version of quantum theory discovered by Louis de Broglie in 1927 and rediscovered by David Bohm in 1952. It is the simplest example of what is often called a hidden variables interpretation of quantum mechanics. In Bohmian mechanics a system of particles is described in part by its wave function, evolving, as usual, according to Schrodinger's equation. However, the...

Qualia
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2025-9-20 14:42)
|
[Revised entry by Michael Tye on September 19, 2025.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Feelings and experiences vary widely. For example, I run my fingers over sandpaper, smell a skunk, feel a sharp pain in my finger, seem to see bright purple, become extremely angry. In each of these cases, I am the subject of a mental state with a very distinctive subjective character. There is something it is like for me to undergo each state, some phenomenology that it has. Philosophers often use the term 'qualia' (singular 'quale') to refer to the introspectively accessible, phenomenal aspects of our mental...

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2025-9-20 13:17)
|
[Revised entry by Paul Redding on September 19, 2025.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Along with J.G. Fichte and, at least in his early work, F.W.J. von Schelling, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770 - 1831) belongs to the period of German idealism in the decades following Kant. The most systematic of the idealists, Hegel attempted, throughout his published writings as well as in his lectures, to elaborate a comprehensive and systematic philosophy from a purportedly logical starting point. He is perhaps most well-known for his teleological account of history, an account that was later taken over by Karl Marx and...

Desiderius Erasmus
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2025-9-20 12:20)
|
[Revised entry by Erika Rummel and Eric MacPhail on September 19, 2025.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1469 - 1536) was not a systematic philosopher although we discern in the large body of his writings a certain Erasmian habit of mind. He often reflected on subjects that invite philosophical inquiry: the influence of nature versus nurture, the relationship between word and thing, the ideal form of government, the nature of faith, and the theory of knowledge. Erasmus' views on these subjects are of interest to historians today, even if they are unstructured, because his works circulated widely and his...
