Altruism
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2016-8-26 9:02)
|
[New Entry by Richard Kraut on August 25, 2016.]
Behavior is normally described as altruistic when it is motivated by a desire to benefit someone other than oneself for that person's sake. The term is used as the contrary of "self-interested" or "selfish" or "egoistic" - words applied to behavior that is motivated solely by the desire to benefit oneself. "Malicious" designates an even greater contrast: it applies to behavior that expresses a desire to harm others simply for...

Feeling pain or dizziness, appearances of color or shape, and episodic thought are some widely accepted examples. Intentionality, on the other hand, has to do with the directedness, aboutness, or reference of mental states - the fact that, for example, you think of or about...

|
[Revised entry by Carl Huffman on August 23, 2016.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Archytas of Tarentum was a Greek mathematician, political leader and philosopher, active in the first half of the fourth century BC (i.e., during Plato's lifetime). He was the last prominent figure in the early Pythagorean tradition and the dominant political figure in Tarentum, being elected general seven consecutive times. He sent a ship to rescue Plato from the clutches of the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius II, in 361, but his personal and philosophical connections to Plato are complex, and there are many signs of disagreement between...
