Generalized Quantifiers  from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy  (2024-9-6 14:01)
[Revised entry by Dag Westerståhl on September 5, 2024. Changes to: Main text, Bibliography, notes.html] Generalized quantifiers are now standard equipment in the toolboxes of both logicians and linguists. The purpose of this entry is to describe these tools: where they come from, how they work, and what they can be used to do. The description is by necessity sketchy, but several more comprehensive surveys exist in the literature and will be referred to when appropriate. To fully appreciate the text below, basic familiarity with elementary set theoretic terminology, and with the language of first-order logic will be helpful....

Comparative Philosophy: Chinese and Western  from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy  (2024-9-6 12:18)
[Revised entry by David Wong on September 5, 2024. Changes to: Main text, Bibliography] Comparative philosophy originated from bringing together philosophical traditions that are perceived to have developed in relative isolation from one another and that are defined quite broadly along cultural and regional lines - Chinese versus Western, for example. For this reason, several main issues about the commensurability of philosophical traditions have constituted much of the early subject matter of comparative philosophy. Doing comparative philosophy well can be very difficult because of the vast range of texts and their...
Korean Buddhism  from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy  (2024-9-6 10:48)
[New Entry by Lucy Hyekyung Jee on September 5, 2024.] Buddhism was introduced to the Korean Peninsula from China during the Korean Three Kingdoms period. It first arrived in Kogury, a kingdom on the northern end of the peninsula, in 372 CE and then in Paekche, a kingdom on the southwest of the peninsula, in 384 CE. It arrived in Shilla, a kingdom on the southeast of the peninsula, in 521 CE by way of Kogury. The influence of Chinese Buddhism on Korean Buddhism cannot be treated lightly because Korea imported mostly sinologized Buddhism, not Indian Buddhism. However, Korea added its...
Nietzsche’s Moral and Political Philosophy  from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy  (2024-9-6 10:26)
[Revised entry by Brian Leiter on September 5, 2024. Changes to: Main text, Bibliography] Nietzsche's moral philosophy is primarily critical in orientation: he attacks morality both for its commitment to untenable descriptive (metaphysical and empirical) claims about human agency, as well as for the deleterious impact of its distinctive norms and values on the flourishing of the highest types of human beings (Nietzsche's "higher men"). His positive ethical views are best understood as combining (i) a kind of consequentialist perfectionism as Nietzsche's implicit theory of the good, with...
