Imagination
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2026-1-13 12:32)
|
[Revised entry by Daniel Munro, Shen-yi Liao, and Tamar Gendler on January 12, 2026.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
To imagine is to represent without aiming at things as they actually, presently, and subjectively are. One can use imagination to represent possibilities other than the actual, to represent times other than the present, and to represent perspectives other than one's own. Unlike perceiving and believing, imagining something does not require one to consider that something to be the case. Unlike desiring or anticipating, imagining something does not require one to wish or expect that something to be the case....

Mental Imagery
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2026-1-13 12:09)
|
[Revised entry by Bence Nanay on January 12, 2026.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
If you close your eyes and visualize an apple, what you experience is mental imagery - visual imagery. But mental imagery is far more pervasive in our mental life than just visualizing. It happens in all sense modalities and it plays a crucial role not just in perception, but also in memory, emotions, language, desires and action-execution. It even plays a substantial role in our engagement with artworks, which makes it a key concept not only in philosophy of mind, but also in aesthetics....

Susan Stebbing
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2026-1-13 11:24)
|
[Revised entry by Michael Beaney and Siobhan Chapman on January 12, 2026.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
Susan Stebbing was a leading figure in British philosophy between the First and Second World Wars. She made significant contributions to the development of the analytic tradition, both in establishing it institutionally and in showing how its ideas and techniques could be applied in a wide range of domains. Her early work focused on logic and during her lifetime she was celebrated chiefly for A Modern Introduction to Logic (1930), which offered an account of both traditional, Aristotelian logic and the new mathematical logic...

Ecological Genetics
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
(2026-1-12 18:49)
|
[Revised entry by Michael Wade on January 12, 2026.
Changes to: Bibliography]
Ecological genetics is the broad field of studies that investigates the relationship between genetic change and features of the biotic and abiotic environment. In population genetic theory, the role of the environment in adaptive evolution tends to be hidden in the recursion equations for gene frequency dynamics, where the common assumption of a constant selection coefficient implies a constant relationship between genotype, phenotype and fitness irrespective of environment. For ecological genetics, in contrast, the...
