[Revised entry by Tzvi Langermann on July 19, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
The centuries following the remarkable achievement of Ibn Sina (Avicenna; d. 1037) were a remarkably creative period in the sciences and philosophy. Sa'd ibn Mansur Ibn Kammūna, a Jew from Baghdad, actively participated in the lively discourse of his day. In his copious writings he takes up the entire gamut of philosophical issues discussed by his contemporaries. Editions, translations and studies of works by Ibn Kammūna and other thinkers of the time have appeared in recent years. Nonetheless, it remains difficult at...

Self-Reference and Paradox
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

[Revised entry by Thomas Bolander on July 19, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography]
In the context of language, self-reference is used to denote a statement that refers to itself or its own referent. In...

Analysis
from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

[Revised entry by Michael Beaney and Thomas Raysmith on July 18, 2024.
Changes to: Main text, Bibliography, bib1.html, bib2.html, bib3.html, bib4.html, bib5.html, bib6.html, s1.html, s2.html, s3.html, s4.html, s5.html, s6.html]
Analysis has always been at the heart of philosophical method, but it has been understood and practised in many different ways. Perhaps, in its broadest sense, it might be defined as a process of identifying or working back to what is more fundamental by means of which something, initially taken as given, can be derived, explained or reconstructed. The derivation, explanation or reconstruction is sometimes conceived as the corresponding process of synthesis, but it is more often counted as part of the analytic project as a whole. This allows great...
